CHANGES IN NATURE
At the end of the lesson, you should be
able to:
- State the meaning of change.
- Mention examples of changes in
the environment.
- list the differences between
temporary change and permanent change.
- mention examples of temporary and
permanent change
Everything around us changes?
Change is when something
becomes different.
Things around us are
always changing. All things change. Both living and nonliving things change
from time to time. Some changes are reversible while some other changes are
irreversible. The changes that are reversible are called temporary change while
the changes that are irreversible are called permanent change.
Temporary change
Temporary change is when
something becomes different for a short period of time before going back to how
it used to be. Living and nonliving things can change temporarily.
Temporary change can
occur when there is a change in the environment or the position of objects or
things.
Examples of Temporary changes
For example, water
becomes ice when put in the refrigerator which is usually cold and turns back
to water when put in a hot pot.
The animal, chameleon,
can also change its color to the color of any environment where it finds
itself.
(In the pictures above
the ice changes to water when placed on the hot stove and it can become ice
again when put in a refrigerator)
Permanent change
Permanent change is when
something becomes different from how it used to be and remains that way without
going back to how it used to be.
When things change
permanently, they form substances different from their old form.
Examples of permanent changes
For example, a young
baby grows into an adult and remains an adult until old age and death.
A tree cut down and made
into furniture remains a piece of furniture till infinity unless the furniture
spoils.
(When the wood above
burns it turns into ashes and remains that way forever)
(When a young chick
hatches from an egg it does not go back into the egg)
Unit 3: Differences
between temporary and permanent change
As discussed earlier, the
changes that happen around us are not the same. Some changes only last for a short
period of time while other changes last forever.
|
Temporary change
|
Permanent change
|
The change is for a short period of time
|
The change stays for ever
|
New objects formed can go back to their original form
|
New objects formed cannot go back to their original form
|
|
Change is reversible
|
Change is a irreversible
|
|
The environment can
cause temporary change
|
The environment cannot
cause permanent change
|
|
No new substance is formed
|
New substances are formed
|
Now answer the following questions
- What is change?
- mention four examples of temporary change.
- When the day changes into
night, what kind of change is it? _____________.
- list any three differences between temporary change and permanent change.
